Project Overview
ASN Impact Investors, a values-driven Dutch investment fund, needed a compelling annual impact report that could translate complex ESG data and investment outcomes into a visually accessible narrative. The goal was to communicate real-world impact across climate, biodiversity, and human rights themes in a way that felt both credible and engaging for a socially conscious audience.
The project required a design led approach to:
Transform dense financial and sustainability data into clear, digestible visual stories
Build a cohesive visual language that reflected ASN's mission-driven identity
Deliver a polished, print-ready report under tight production timelines
Target Audience
Socially conscious investors, stakeholders, and sustainability advocates who care deeply about where their money goes and the tangible change it creates. The design had to feel honest, grounded, and purposeful, while remaining visually sophisticated.
My Responsibilities
As the Lead Designer, I was responsible for:
Defining the overall design concept and visual direction for the report
Developing the layout system, grid structure, and typographic hierarchy
Creating an illustration style and custom data visualizations tailored to ASN's brand values
Designing infographics that made impact metrics legible and emotionally resonant
Delivering the final production-ready files from concept through to print
Design Process
Research & Exploration
Reviewed ASN's existing brand materials and previous reports to establish continuity
Identified gaps in clarity where dense data was underserved by previous visual treatments
Aligned early with stakeholders to define the tone — purposeful, warm, transparent
Visual Development
Established a design concept rooted in ASN's ethical investment philosophy
Developed a layout system flexible enough to handle varied content types, data, narrative, photography, and callouts
Created custom illustrations and infographic components that gave abstract impact numbers a human and environmental scale
The Big Challenge
The project started with limited creative direction and unclear content structure, creating early friction in the workflow. With a tight deadline in play, there was little room to course correct once production began.
The Solution
Once a clear visual framework was established and signed off, the project moved efficiently from that point forward. I locked in the design system early, layout grids, color application, illustration style, and data visualization templates, so the production phase could run without bottlenecks. This gave the content and client teams a reliable structure to work within, reducing back-and-forth in the later stages.
Impact & Results
The client was highly satisfied with the outcome, citing the clarity and visual quality of the final report
ASN reused the same design template for the following year's impact report — a direct signal that the system was built to last
The report successfully made complex impact data feel accessible and credible to its audience
What I Learned
Clarity of direction at the start of a project is everything — ambiguity costs more time than it saves
A well-locked design system is the best investment you can make before production begins
Designing for mission-driven organizations means the work has to earn trust visually, not just look good
